In 2020 I was working in the lab of Valter Longo at University of Southern California on the Fasting Mimicking Diet and I realized that the clinical study I was analyzing had given different results than what expected. The study was a comparison between the Fasting Mimicking Diet and the Mediterranean Diet.

The Fasting Mimicking Diet is a 5 days long special diet that comes in a big box containing 5 little boxes, one for each one of the 5 days, containing lyophilized soups, crackers, nut bars, tea bags (mint, lemon, hibiscus) and a small bottle of glycerol.

The purpose of the study I was assigned to was to evaluate the changes in RHI (Reactive Hyperemia Index), an index of endothelial dysfunction and of cardiovascular risk in subjects with hypertension and other cardiometabolic disorders.

The endothelium is the layer of cells that compose the wall of our vessels, those who carry the blood around, and if those cells are not healthy they don't properly contract or dilate the vessels, and that leads to poor control of blood pressure (hence to hypertension), which may lead to stroke, heart disease, and many other often lethal cardiovascular disease. While analyzing the data, I realized that, meantime the Mediterranean Diet had decreased the overall cardiovascular risk, the Fasting Mimicking Diet had given strange results:

  • subjects on the Fasting Mimicking Diet had lost weight, but RHI had worsened: their endothelial health was worse after taking the Fasting Mimicking Diet than before starting the study!! In other words, I had found that the Fasting Mimicking Diet had quite severe side effects on patients with hypertension!! (see attached files Manuscript submitted to JAHA and Supplemental)

After showing those results to my boss and supposed mentor at that time - Valter Longo, the one who invented (and who earn from the sale of) the Fasting Mimicking Diet, sold by his company L-Nutra - he started being hostile against me. Given that he would pretend of being ok with whatever result we would obtain in our experiments, I did not expect such a reaction, and it took me a long while to understand why he was being hostile.
