The irreplaceable value of resourcefulness
I started sewing when I was a little child.
As a 5 year old I already knew how to sew, to embroider, to crochet, to knit. I used to make my Barbies' dresses by myself: beautiful mermaid dresses with velvet or lace, and cool spared buttons to decorate.
My grandma used to be a seamstress, and almost all my aunts used to knit, crochet, sew, and make their own clothing, so I always had access to a bunch of scraps, threads, buttons, and learning how to do those things seemed not only normal but necessary.
